Single-use filtration and the environment: An interview with Kevin Barry, Second Nature Brands, Inc.

Kevin Barry is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Second Nature, a home filtration subscription service founded in 2012. INDA’s Joan Izzo met with Kevin to discuss the state of single-use filters and his upcoming panel event at FiltXPO 2022.

Q: As you're a speaker on single-use filtration, what do you see as the impact of the environmentally conscious consumer?

A: First and foremost, one in five consumers in the United States are making a purchase decision based on value that is being added to a product. That is, either a green product or a sustainable product has some type of corporate social governance program is providing value to stakeholders outside of folks who are only looking to make profits for shareholders. So that's 20% of consumers. That's been growing year over year. What I'm starting to see through our customers is that not only do people in general feel bad about using a one-time-use product for a few months that gets thrown away; they are wanting to see innovation and change in the industry.

Q: In your experience developing sustainable filtration products: What are you excited about and what are you looking forward to in the quest to help solve this situation?

A: There are three specific areas that I see filter companies, especially residential filter manufacturers, working to help out with the environment. One is changing out air filters on time. The EPA has estimated that 5 to 15% of your home's energy cost can be reduced by just changing your air filters on time. So that's a huge energy reduction, if every single household was changing their air filters on time, it would be a great contribution.

The second thing that can be done involves the transportation of air filters. Air filters are very large products. They take up a lot of volume. There are ways for manufacturers to significantly decrease the carbon footprint of transporting air filters from the place of manufacture to the customer. So for companies like us who are shipping through small parcel carriers on a regular basis many times a year, it's important for us to look at that carbon footprint and be continuing to work on reducing that, which Second Nature has been working extremely hard on over the last few years.

The final challenge involves the material make-up and components that are utilized in an air filter. Common air filter components today are plastic, metal, and paper, and many of those have the ability to be recycled, but today, there are no large-scale programs for air filtration recycling on a consumer level for a residential consumer who wants to put their air filter back into a second life, even if it's a second life where something gets utilized for a few more years before it goes to a landfill. There are companies and offerings that are able to do those types of programs, but that still has not been developed in the air filtration space, and that's a really big opportunity that I think would be extremely beneficial for the environment and for the conscientious consumers who are interested in having a green product.

Q: You’ll be one of the panelists participating in the Filtration Summit on Global Change. What do you believe participants in this panel will take away?

A: I think the participants who are listening to this panel are going to be learning from folks in the industry who are working hard today to innovate their products and to make their products better and keep up with the times and to continue to progress and move the industry forward. What I hope is that the folks who are listening have more awareness about what consumers are looking for when it comes to the sustainability of products. There's a new generation coming, so there are going to be new buyers. It's really going to be important for people to start listening to what is upcoming. Otherwise certain people might be left in the dust.

It’s the industry’s future view with “Filter Media Market Trends & Industry Statistics.” On Tuesday, March 29th at 11 am at FiltXPO™, Brad Kalil, INDA’s Director of Market Research Statistics, will share information from the recently published North American Nonwovens Industry Outlook report. This in-depth industry review will include details on how the filtration market compares in size and growth to the overall nonwovens market in North America.
